Theme: Advancing Research and Innovation in Energy and Environmental Sustainability: Global Insights and Local Applications First Session Special Lecture by Mohd Hafizal Bin Mohd Isa, PhD, Associate Professor, Faculty of Built Environment, Universiti Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Lecture Title: THE SOUL OF PLACE: REDISCOVERING ARCHITECTURAL IDENTITY IN A GLOBAL AGE Architectural identity goes beyond physical form—it embodies culture, history, environment, and community aspirations. In today’s globalized world, cities risk becoming homogenized, losing cultural depth. This lecture examines how tradition, climate, heritage, and technology shape architecture, using global and regional case studies. It emphasizes balancing innovation with continuity, showing that sustainable identity must integrate local materials, community values, and symbolic narratives—ensuring buildings remain functional while rooted in place, culture, and belonging. Dr. Mohd Hafizal Mohd Isa is an Associate Professor at the Department of Architecture, Faculty of Built Environment, Universiti Malaya. He earned his Ph.D. in Engineering (Architecture) from Tohoku University, Japan (2013), a Master’s in Sustainable Building Technology from the University of Nottingham, UK (2008), and a Bachelor’s in Architecture from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). From 2016 to 2024, he served as Deputy Director of the International Mobility & Collaboration Centre (IMCC) at USM, fostering international partnerships and student mobility. His research focuses on sustainable architecture, renewable energy, thermal comfort, and indoor environmental quality, with projects enhancing building performance through innovative design and materials. Actively engaged in Problem-Based Learning (PBL) with international students, he links education to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. He teaches Design Studios and Building Structure, with research interests in indoor environment, thermal energy storage, and building energy.
