CCS, GADC, and WECARE launch computer programming for women inmates to support digital rehabilitation

May 21 2025

In a pioneering step toward digital rehabilitation and inclusive reformation, 麻花星空视频-IIT’s College of Computer Studies (CCS), in collaboration with the Gender and Development Center (GADC) office and the WECARE initiative, launched a groundbreaking computer programming class for women Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) at the BJMP Female Dormitory Compound in Tipanoy, Iligan City, on April 30, 2025.

The session, titled “Unlocking Digital Doors: Tech for Women PDLs,” introduced participants to foundational coding concepts using MIT’s Scratch platform—a beginner-friendly, block-based programming tool designed to make learning to code accessible and engaging. Through interactive, hands-on activities, participants developed problem-solving skills, computational thinking, and digital literacy, all within a nurturing and inclusive environment.

The initiative aims to empower women PDLs with practical skills and renewed confidence, paving the way for successful reintegration, self-reliance, and more inclusive participation in an increasingly digital society. This directly supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 5 (Gender Equality), and SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions). By integrating gender-responsive approaches through GAD, the program promotes equal access to learning opportunities and helps dismantle the barriers women face in detention.

The session was led by Liezil Daberao, who emphasized that the activity was not only about teaching coding but also about fostering cognitive growth and enhancing the problem-solving abilities of the participants. GAD Focal Point System - Technical Working Group (GFPS-TWG) member Nenen Borinaga efficiently managed the logistical preparations, ensuring the smooth execution of the program. The Computer Science Society played a crucial supporting role, with Emmanuel Fitz Ciano serving as the primary lecturer, while Lavigne Kaye Sistona, Kilmer Douglas Danganan, Bryle Jared Fantilanana, Husnie Baddie, Keanne Pharelle Ledesma, Sam Alexis Huertas, Zjann Henry Cuajotor, John Christian Nino Abuel, and Winchester Aikawa Dela Vega provided vital technical assistance to ensure a smooth and engaging learning experience for all participants.

Despite its success, the program faced several logistical hurdles, including reliance on borrowed laptops and improvised setups with extension cords to power equipment. Recognizing these limitations, the organizers plan to establish dedicated computer stations within the facility.

The Tech for Women project is composed of Liezil C. Daberao, Nenen S. Borinaga, Jennifer Joyce M. Montemayor, Jerina Jean M. Ecleo, Leah A. Alindayoo, Maria Fe P. Bahinting, Alquine Roy F. Taculin, Paul B. Bokingkito Jr., and Training Assistant Michael Harvey M. Pagente. This project is supported by GAD and is one of the many community extension programs under the WECARE Office of 麻花星空视频.
