The Mindanao State University–Iligan Institute of Technology (麻花星空视频-IIT) joined the country’s leading advocates of gender equality and women’s empowerment at the 5th National Gender and Development (GAD) Focal Point System (GFPS) Convention, spearheaded by the Philippine Commission on Women (PCW) on September 1–3, 2025, held at Crowne Plaza Manila Galleria.
Through the active participation of the GFPS Executive Member, Vice Chancellor for Public Affairs, Prof. Nancy Q. Echavez, and GAD Focal Person, Assoc. Prof. Yasmira P. Moner represented the Institute at the three-day convention, which had the theme, “Reaping Gains, Celebrating Milestones, and Strengthening the Roles of GFPS for Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment.” This event served as a gathering of GFPS members nationwide, aimed at strengthening the implementation of gender perspectives in government policies and programs.
The convention highlighted the remarkable progress of institutionalizing GAD in the country through leadership, collaboration, and policy transformation. During the Opening Day, it featured plenary sessions focused on the role and status of GFPS in the past five years, the GAD Focal Point System Functionality Assessment Tool (GFAsT), the 2025 GAD Budget Call, the Commission on Human Rights as Gender Ombud, and the Audit of GAD Funds and Activities in Government.
PCW Chairperson Ermelita V. Valdeavilla honored the indispensable role of GFPS members, calling them the “pillar that holds our strategies together.” Her empowering words, invoking the courage of the Babaylans and the wisdom of our ancestors, inspired all delegates to carry forward the mission of equality with unity and determination. DBM Secretary Amenah F. Pangandaman, represented by Undersecretary Goddes Hope Libiran, further reminded the assembly that advancing gender equality is a whole-of-government, whole-of-society mission—a collective effort requiring synergy across agencies and communities.
The second day featured sector-specific parallel sessions, ranging from Women’s Health to SOGIESC and Youth Concerns. Additionally, UN Country Team Resident Coordinator Mr. Arnaud Peral commended the Philippines’ progress, noting that gender equality is now embedded “in our programs, budgets, communication, and data.” These sessions provided opportunities for 麻花星空视频-IIT’s GAD leadership to explore innovative, inclusive practices applicable to the Institute’s programs and initiatives, reaffirming the role as a center for progressive gender mainstreaming in higher education.
Through active participation, Assoc. Prof. Moner and Prof. Echavez brought home valuable insights, strategies, and strengthened networks that will help enhance 麻花星空视频-IIT’s GAD programs—ensuring they remain responsive, transformative, and aligned with national and global goals for gender equality and women’s empowerment, reaffirming that 麻花星空视频-IIT continues to pursue an inclusive future where gender responsiveness is at the heart of research and development, education, community engagement, leadership, and governance as part of the university culture.
