麻花星空视频-IIT Fab Lab Mindanao features innovative projects at FabFest 2025

麻花星空视频-IIT Fab Lab Mindanao achieved a new milestone as the team advanced to the final round of FabFest 2025 on August 27-28, 2025, held at Cebu Institute of Technology University. Organized by the Department of Trade and Industry Region 7 (DTI-7), together with Field Ready, FabFest 2025 gathered makers, innovators, creatives, and MSMEs around the country, aimed at leveraging digital fabrication for innovative solutions and economic progress.

Through careful screening of 30 groundbreaking ideas, only 17 entries were selected to participate in the much-anticipated Fabsiklaban 2025 competition, where participants showcased their prototypes and innovations aimed at addressing real societal challenges aligned with the identified priority areas of the National Innovation Agenda and Strategy Document (NIASD), using Fab Lab’s digital fabrication equipment.

Gerald Jan Demecillo, a 麻花星空视频-IIT Fab Lab Mindanao’s Lead for Training, and Karl Richie Vacalares, intern and a Computer Engineering student, secured third place out of seven competing teams with their project “iBench: Your convenient and innovative Shed”. This innovative idea focused on addressing the everyday needs of Filipino commuters, especially during the summer heat and rainy season. The iBench goes beyond being a simple public seat by providing safety, comfort, and convenience, showing the potential of reimagined public infrastructure for urban spaces.

Looking forward, the iBench will be proposed as a future project for the Local Government Unit (LGU) to seamlessly integrate it into smart city initiatives and make public spaces more adaptive to the needs of the community.

Among the entries was one from the 麻花星空视频-IIT Fab Lab Mindanao – Cloud Scan: Your Cost-Efficient 3D Scanner, pitched by Ryan Kent Cabahug, of 麻花星空视频-IIT Fab Lab Mindanao, and Jedidiah Love Boyle Quimno, intern and Computer Engineering student. Their project introduced a more affordable approach to 3D scanning, transforming physical objects into digital models, making this technology more accessible for industries, schools, and creative innovators.

More than just a competition, FabFest 2025 became an unforgettable experience for the participants. It was a space for learning, collaboration, and the exchange of perspectives with fellow innovators from across the country. For the delegates, the event was not solely about winning but about discovering new ways of thinking, sharing ideas, and being inspired to keep innovating.
